OVERVIEW

In line with the Prime Minister’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) to achieve developed nation status for Malaysia by year 2020, business tourism and international events have been earmarked as sectors which can help contribute to economic growth through the attraction of high yield international visitors to Malaysia.

In response to this, Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) was established initially to focus on attracting business events (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) to Malaysia. In the last quarter of 2010, the Ministry of Tourism assigned MyCEB the responsibility to establish the International Events Unit (IEU) with the mission to further develop the international events industry.

The primary role of the IEU:

Identify and support bids for international events with high economic impact value. This includes sports, arts, culture and lifestyle events.
To evaluate and support home based events that have the potential to attract international publicity and attendances.
To identify and support ‘cluster’ events (complementary events to main event) that have the potential to attract additional international visitors, extend their stay and/or increase international publicity.
To work with private and government entities to improve Malaysia’s competitiveness in the international events market.

INTERNATIONAL EVENTS UNIT SUPPORT PROGRAMME

The International Events Unit (IEU) has developed an event support programme to assist local organisers to bid for and promote major events that have a specific interest and focus on attracting international publicity and attendances. A specific set of criteria has been set up to evaluate the direct and indirect economic value. The level of support will be based on an assessment of the overall economic value of the proposed event and several criteria such as the number of international participants, length of stay, publicity value, event profile and timing (of event). Other less tangible factors such as the development of community benefits will also be considered.
